We all want healthy and glowing skin but where does one begin? The sheer number of options is overwhelming—what even goes on first? From serums and moisturizers to face oils, “how to layer skincare products?” is the question we get most. But fear not! We're here to help you achieve that healthy skin you've been dreaming of.
First things first, let's get one thing straight: your skincare routine shouldn't be rocket science. Whether you are a skincare newbie in need of the basics or a pro looking to level up, we've got you covered. You'll be shocked at how much better your products work when layered correctly.
Layering Step 1: Toners, Micellar Water and/or Essence
The simple answer to layering is, always start from light to thick consistencies, water base to oil base. This typically means your toner or if you don't use a toner but prefer micellar water or essence, this is where you would start. I love toners, a good one should help remove dead skin cells. It acts like a gentle exfoliator and prepares your skin for what is next. Toners and micellar water are best applied with cotton balls. For essence, just use your fingers so you don't lose too much product.
Layering Step 2: Serums
Serums are the superheroes of the skincare world. They are packed with active ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin to target specific concerns. Since they are usually water-based, they should be applied after your toner or essence. If you use more than one serum to target, start with the water base first and follow the light to thick consistency rule.
Ideally use a serum that can target multiple issues, saves time and money. However the exception to the day layering routine is to save retinols and tretinoins for night-time use only, they are highly photosensitive and should only be used after sunset.
We recommend our ENSO Serum, but invite you to try different products until you find the one that works best for you.
Layering Step 3: Blemishes and Eye Cream
Following serum(s) and before moisturizer is where we would spot treat any pesky blemishes. If you are treating blemishes, remember no matter how strong the urge, do not squeeze! Let the product do the work. Of course, in severe cases your licensed esthetician may have to do some extra work, i.e., lancing the blemish but you should never do this yourself (trust me, I’ve learned the hard way in my younger years.)
If you use eye cream, this is where you should apply gently, using your fingertips to tap the product until it absorbs it under the eye.
Layering Step 4: Creams, Moisturizers and Face Oils
Moisturizer is a must-have in any skincare routine. Be it a light moisturizer, heavier cream or face oil, these products helps to lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated throughout the day.
If you have oily skin, opt for a lightweight moisturizer that won't leave a greasy residue. If you have dry skin, you might want to consider adding a thicker cream on top of your moisturizer. This will help to lock in even more moisture and prevent any dryness or flakiness. Just make sure to give your moisturizer enough time to absorb before applying your cream.
Our ENSO HEMP® Skincare Renewal Cream is made to feel light on the skin but packed with rich protective ingredients like organic aloe, rooibos pomegranate, and other natural ingredients more. We combined these with Hyaluronic Acid (the skin’s work horse) in conjunction with our unique CBD blend, for a holistic deep hydration that helps minimizes acne breakouts, aids with skin rashes while tackling fine lines and wrinkles to aid in restoring our skin’s natural glow.
Layering Step 5 Protection:
Finally, sunscreen. The last and very important step in any skincare routine: protect your skin from the Sun!
It’s important to protect our skin from harmful UV rays that can cause premature aging and skin damage. Even on cloudy days—especially on cloudy days—don’t leave the house without it. Specifically, if you use retinols or tretinoins, you must protect your skin. These ingredients, exposed to UV rays, will cause more damage than good if you are not well protected.
And that’s it: you are on your way to a healthy, more radiant and glowing look in 5 simple steps.
Hope this helped to answer some of your burning questions. Just remember, consistency is key. Stick to your routine and be patient. With time, you will see the results you’ve been hoping for.
